From Limbo to Action: Building a Filmmaking Future Through Goals and Collaboration

As we venture into 2025, I've embraced a new approach: setting small, achievable goals before taking on bigger challenges. I wonder if other artists are experiencing what I am right now—this peculiar state of limbo. There are several scripts I wrote and I’m circling which one to dive into, but as we all know, filmmaking always circles back to one crucial element: funding --  and the path of distribution. What I am learning is that I need to create my path of distribution which includes marketing and audience outreach. It’s something I’m learning over time, and from listening to other filmmakers, there is no clear path.

While I'm committed to self-funding as much as possible and welcome like-minded collaborators, we can't escape the reality that film is among the most financially demanding art forms. I am exploring Wefunder which is different from Kickstarter. In a nutshell, Wefunder investors have equity in the film, as opposed to Kickstarter, which is a donation in exchange for perks or rewards. This time around I feel that I need to align myself with a Producer or Line Producer who can oversee the budget and fundraising aspect.

To those reading this: I understand the weight of our challenges. But I believe deeply in carving out our own creative spaces and pressing forward. When people ask why I persist in filmmaking despite its difficulties, my answer is simple: "I've always felt compelled." It's an easy response to give, but it carries the weight of countless hours and boundless energy poured into creating something that becomes your whole world.
